Philips Support Page 55PFL5766/F7
This is a Google Android TV.
Philips notes at the bottom of the support page: "USB multimedia playback requires third-party app installation. Please visit the Google Play Store for more details, including app availability for your country." The idea behind Android TVs is that owners would be better off choosing their own apps from thousands of Android apps instead of being forced to use the media player that was built into the TV. However, owners must install a media player to view content from a USB device.
The Google Android TV may seem complex, but it is just like using a phone: find the apps you want, download them, install them, and run them.
Recommended Video and Media App for the Philips
The industry-standard free app for playing videos on Android TVs is the VLC Media Player.
