Toshiba Fire TVs and the BillionDollarArtGallery

Modified on Fri, 07 Apr 2023 at 12:24 AM

Below are instructions for using the BillionDollarArtGallery with a Toshiba Fire TV. Toshiba Fire TVs vary from model to model. Please send your TV model number for the best support response, or search our Knowledge Base for your TV's manual.

TECHNICAL NOTES: Most BillionDollarArtGallery products are formatted for FAT32. The only exceptions were some devices sold through The Sharper Image catalog. If you purchased through The Sharper Image, please contact us. Toshiba TVs read FAT32 formats. BillionDollarArtGallery videos are called “0000 Video…”, which floats them to the top of the file stack so that you can easily find them. Our video files are MP4, which are the most widely supported. To ensure the integrity of your files, we suggest that you try them on your computer. If you can view the files on your computer, we can almost certainly find to play them on your TV.

Our Advice for Toshiba Fire TV Owners

We downloaded the Toshiba Fire TV manual, but it mainly covers installation, and does not address USB operation.

Fire TVs use technology from Amazon Fire TV to access streaming services. Fire TVs are like combining computer capability with a TV. Like computers, you may not have the features you want, but you can download free apps that will add those features. For Fire TVs, you can download the popular VLC media player, a free and open-source, portable, cross-platform media player software and streaming media server developed by the VideoLAN project.

Several Toshiba Fire TV users report: “If you have videos you’d like to watch, download the VLC for Fire TV app to your tv. When you start the VLC app it will recognize your drive and ask you if you’d like it to add it to your available media. After that, you can watch any videos on your drive.”

The following applies to the Toshiba Fire TV Edition current gen.

  1. The USB drive is picky. During testing, it didn’t recognize an old PNY 64GB flash drive, but it did recognize an 8GB flash drive.
  2. The TV only reads fat32. If your drive is formatted to ntfs, the TV will either have trouble recognizing the drive or it will warn you that it cannot read that format and offer to format it as fat32 to use as “external” storage, or as its own format, to use for “internal” storage.
  3. If your drive is fat32 it will notify you that you need to reformat it with the internal file system if you would like to use the drive internally for app storage.

External Storage

When plugged in it will notify you to press the menu button if you’d like to view any pictures on your drive.

If you have videos you’d like to watch, download the VLC for Fire TV app to your TV. When you start the VLC app, it will recognize your drive and ask you if you’d like it to add it to your available media. After that you can watch any videos on your drive.

Storage Type (USB / USB via OTG / microSD)

External storage support varies based on which Amazon Fire TV model you have. The 2nd-gen Fire TV can access videos from its microSD slot or its USB port. The 1st-gen Fire TV can only access videos from its USB port, because it does not have a microSD card slot.

If your Fire TV Edition television is made by Toshiba, it is either a 2018, 2019, 2020, or 2021 model. To determine which model year your TV is, look on the label on the back of the device for the model number. Example model numbers are TF-32A710U21 and 43LF421C19. If the model number ends in “19” then it is a 2018 model, if it ends in “20” then it is a 2019 model, if it ends in “21” then it is a 2020 model, and if it ends in “22” then it is a 2021 model.
